Under The Tongue are an alt-rock duo based in Berlin.
Hey Loud Stuff, thanks so much for having us here, we really appreciate your support.
You’re welcome Mark and Julia, great to have you. First up, how would you describe your music?
Our music could be described as ‘if your unconscious mind could sing you might just be listening to Under The Tongue’. Having said that it’s alternative rock with singalong choruses cinematic drums, splashes of electro and simple guitar lines. Put all of that in a blender and you are getting close 😉
Tell us about how the history of the project?
Mark: Julia and I met after I played at a festival in Berlin in 2008. Julia loves all things Australian and came to the festival to see my solo music. She loved it and danced and she never dances at gigs so that was cool for me. Julia contacted me Over MySpace….yep you heard it right and wrote on my wall saying that she loved the gig.
I was naturally intrigued and checked out her profile. It said that she played bass, sang and played piano. I was stoked and was looking for a bass player at the time so I contacted her. We met and chatted all night about music, life and everything in between.
Fast forward to now and we are still doing music together. The aim was to make music that we loved and not to try and fit into any given genre, just to do what felt right. We still stand by that.
What are your influences/ musical heroes?
That’s a good one, it varies from The Beatles, Puscifer, Tool, Audioslave, Led Zeppelin, Cat Stevens and the list could go on forever. There are so many great artists.
What inspires you?
We are inspired by dreams, hypnotherapy, the unconscious mind, friends, travel, love, fear, good riffs etc.
Do you write on the road? Or do you prefer to write in the studio?
Mark: I actually do both, the road is cool if you can get some free time as travelling is a great inspiration. I write at home also and have small studio here so I write in there a lot. When inspiration comes, it comes…..sorry if that sounds like a stupid cliche.
What is your favourite song to perform live?
That is a good one and can vary on any given day.
We are enjoying ‘Troubled Mind’ at the moment, a creepy rocker about a mother that marries her son because he is the only one that understands her. Love the text but the groove is killer so that is the fav at the moment.
What would be your dream tour to be a part of?
A tour with Puscifer would be really cool as we could chat with Maynard about the wine growing process and maybe do some training with him……oh yeah!!!! Play some music as well 😉
What are you current thoughts on the music industry?
How long do you have? The music industry is just that… an industry, and anything that becomes industrialised loses its heart. It is a strange time at the moment but also there are opportunities for indie artists to really thrive like never before.
Labels are pretty much a bank with some contacts and if we got the right offer with a label with a heart then I am sure that we would consider the offer, I don’t know if that actually exists though.
It is a shame but most of the radio stations have been bought by big labels so the internet is the place to make some noise if that is possible. We love what we do and will continue to make music that we love and videos that are weird, interesting and a bit crazy just because we can. 🙂
What is the funniest/weirdest experience you have had on tour?
Mark: That’s a good one, I remember playing live in Australia and some people were going nuts in the first few rows and one of the ladies was dancing, screaming, crying, laughing and then flashed me. I was a bit envious to be honest as she went through so many emotions in such a short time, it must have been very cathartic for her.
What are your future plans?
Mark: The future plans are to continue to release awesome music and videos every couple of months, also I am in the process of writing and producing more music all the time with another solo album coming out next year but first we have so much to do with Under The Tongue.
Next year we are looking at touring in South America, Mexico and Europe so there is never a dull moment.
You have been awesome Loud Stuff thanks so much for your time.
