Ghosts of Sunset talk to Loud-Stuff about throwback 80s, love, and playing in a dog park.
How would you describe your music?
Todd from Ghosts Of Sunset here! – Ghosts of Sunset has a throwback to the 80’s feel but we try and put our own twist and feel on things. We try and find the right guitarists to put solos on our songs. We try and picture what guy would be the best fit for the song. We reach out to them via social media and hope that they return our messages.
Tell us about how the history of the project?
John Merchant my partner had this vision for a concept album about a fictional band that is from a small Midwestern town and heads to Hollywood to ‘make it’. You can hear the progression in each song. The story tells the bands rise and fall of their fame.
We even tried to start rawer like an Early Van Halen to a modern Bon Jovi with the production.
What are your influences/ musical heroes?
Kiss has always been my favourite band up till the end of the reunion tour. I have many musical influences though. Everything from Kiss, The Replacements, The Sex Pistols to Poison!
What inspires you?
For me, it is mostly love. Emotions are all over the place though these days. Sometimes I even hear a song and think man I wish I had written that. Then I try my best to write a song that captures the emotion and feel of it!
Do you write on the road? Or do you prefer to write in the studio?
I have written on the road but I think I do better when I am at home and not so distracted by other things around me. I like quiet time to myself to do that. There is always lyrics, melodies and parts floating around. It can pop up at any time.
What is your favourite song to perform live?
The band has yet to do a live performance, Covid kind of killed that for us. We look forward to it though!
What would be your dream tour to be a part of?
I always like opening for national acts. Especially if they are bands that I love! As far as a ‘bigger tour’ goes. Probably a 3 or 4 band bill with Faster Pussycat, L.A Guns and others like that!
What are your current thoughts on the music industry?
We are in strange times with the whole streaming thing. It is great for a band like Ghosts of Sunset cuz it gets us out to the masses easier. The problem is that the market is super saturated!
What is the funniest/weirdest experience you have had on tour?
One-time John and I played at a dog park! Super strange!
What are your future plans?
Getting our E.P out titled Headed West at the end of the year or beginning of 2021. Ghosts of Sunset is currently writing new songs for our next release. So far, we have recruited members of Bang Tango and Little Cesar.
