How would you describe your music?
We have been described as: “Bladerunner Rock ’n’ Roll with dark acidic shades.” We create dark sonic cinema for the mind, film noir, Sci-Fi soundscapes with a nod to music from Twin Peaks, Pulp Fiction. Thumping drum machine beat, with dark vox and gothy atmospherics situated in the post punk/electronica genre. Think joy division, doors, chemical brothers… that’ll give you a rough idea where we are coming from.
Tell us about the history of the project?
I had just finished being in Attrition who were based in London at the time, I had done the album Smiling at the Hypogonder Club and toured Holland (first time abroad with a band). Decided to move back to my native Northampton (famous for Bauhaus, Alan Moore and the film Kinky Boots) hooked up with my brother John Novak (Isaws, Wheres Lisse) and Tony Booker an x-art school student (I also had studied at art school).
There have been many periods/eras as the line up changed many times each bringing a new angle and experiences.
Mars album: gigs in France including Gibus, Locomotive (next to moulin rouge) both in Paris played with the Mission, Deptford Crypt (actually under a church), Alice In Wonderland (Dave Vanians, Damned club).
Totem, Pandoras Box albums: first gigs in Germany, Belgium, in one tour we played France, Belgium, Holland, Germany, Austria, Hungary and our debut in Czechoslovakia where we recorded a live album in Prague.
Luna Tide: recorded the album in Bonn studio, Germany. Many tours of Belgium, Germany and our first visit to Poland.
Dark Amour and Zenith Nemesis albums: working more in an electronic direction, line up slimmed down to Alex Novak (vox) and Andy Denton (guitar, programming), playing festivals in Warsaw and the Castle Party (in an actual castle in Bolkow, Poland) with New Model Army and Lumous festival in Tampere, Finland at midnight with the sun still shining.
The most recent studio album was Icon Cd, Dl (Glass Records Modern) alongside the release of Venus Fly Trap, Alex Novak-Mercurial (best of) Cd, Dl (Glass Records Modern) out in May. Its a retrospective of all the bands and projects I have been involved with including Isaws, Religious Overdose, Tempest, Attrition, Venus Fly Trap, Nova State Conspiracy….done many gigs with the likes of Killing Joke, Spear of Destiny, Chameleons, Theatre of Hate, Pop Will Eat Itself…plan to be playing when stuff gets less weird…hopefully September onwards…
What are your influences/ musical heroes?
Everybody is influenced by somebody else, but art, music is not made in a vacuum, the trick is to take these elements and arrange them into something original. Never wanted to sound exactly like another band, always striving to do something unique.
What inspires you?
The recent studio album Icon drew a lot on the Warhol quote, “Everyone will be famous for fifteen minutes,” and the idea of being famous for being famous, celebrity, idols, screen goddesses, the new religion.
Did we create God/gods with our fertile imagination, trying to describe the world around us, making sense of natural events, sun, moon… Science fiction in the widest sense, Tarantino movies… would like to have a track on one of his soundtracks.
Do you write on the road? Or do you prefer to write in the studio?
We put time aside to write and record an album and then play when the new release is available, well thats the plan anyway…
What is your favourite song to perform live?
It’s a set so the tracks fit together to produce a coherent whole, it all works together.
What would be your dream tour to be a part of?
Blimey, past and present? Joy Division, Kraftwerk, Doors, Goldfrapp, Prodigy…too many I’m afraid.
What are your current thoughts on the music industry?
Its all possible…but if you want to sell, control material get out and play live, you need to sort you own t-shirts and merchandise, produce releases in all formats: LP, CD,Dl, tapes etc…so you have interesting material for fans.
What is the funniest/weirdest experience you have had on tour?
Can’t be any weirder than it is at the moment..are we in some dystopian future?
What are your future plans?
Plugging the new Cd, Dl Venus Fly Trap, Alex Novak-Mercurial…get out and play….re-issue our second and third albums Totem and Pandoras Box…and hope we wake up and it’s been a bad dream….good luck everyone..see you on the other side…
