Sweet N Juicy are a fruit gimmick led band that put the fun in funk.
How would you describe your music?
Sweet (The Banana): We call our music Songwriter Funk. We honed our music to be as enjoyable as possible to humans while encouraging them to party.
Tell us about how the history of the project?
Juicy (The Strawberry): Sweet went off on a journey in search of new flavours to bring to the music! He met me while I was still on the farm, and after telling me about the wonders of humans, we started throwing parties in Portland, Oregon. Eventually N’ came in with a band of pineapples, and after hearing him play the drums we knew we had to be friends with him.
What are your influences/ musical heroes?
N’ (NefertitiPharoahSandraMundusifilOpolis the Pineapple): I love RHCP, and Sweet freaks out over Prince. He can’t shut up about how great Prince was. He always says, “Best all-time overall performer, songwriter, producer, musician” on and on and on without stop. Sometimes for days.
Juicy: I like Gorillaz, both the band AND the animal.
What inspires you?
Sweet: People having a good time- sex, drugs, and rock n’ roll.
Do you write on the road, or do you prefer to write in the studio?
Sweet: If we have time and a place to write on the road that’s awesome, but most of the songs on our records were written at rehearsal. N’ kicks a beat, I lay down a bass line, and Juicy puts some fruity keyboard lines on top. Sometimes our shows inspire us to write, too. Energies from the audience help us write with an attitude that maybe otherwise wouldn’t be there. We’ll refine a song for a while with the help of the crowd before we record it. In that way I guess the audience is our fourth member.
What is your favorite song to perform live?
Juicy: I like playing Simple Things. It reminds me of the farm, and I get to improvise whatever I want for however long I want at the top of it.
N’: Inconceivable is probably my favorite! Whenever we play that song humans really start to get crazy. I like the way it feels to play to crazy humans.
What would be your dream tour to be a part of?
Sweet: I’d like to go on the road with Dave Matthews band. Play huge shows, festivals. I think we’d be a good warm-up act for him, too. Honestly, we’d be a great opening act for most bands. We have enough material to fit whomever accordingly.
What are your current thoughts on the music industry?
N’: I think it’s just great!
What is the funniest/weirdest experience you have had on tour?
Juicy: We’ve had run-ins with some colorful humans. Y’all can get straight up goofy! We’ve seen people fall out of chairs, dance for the first time (seriously though, that was cool), and then this one time we ran away from a dinosaur. That T-Rex chased us all the way through the redwoods back into Oregon on the coast. We hitchhiked and sought shelter in a groovy little bar called the Underground. We still go back there to play.
What are your future plans?
Sweet: We’ve set up a West Coast tour from Seattle to San Diego in February- really looking forward to that. We have some shorts coming out, and sooner than later a live video. We’re going to Montana and Idaho in late April. Lots of playing! Basically just touring and projects. 2020 is going to be really busy and we’re looking forward to it.
