How do you make sure that you stand out from other bands in your genre?

Just doing what we want to do and not focusing on what other people are doing. Sam tends to write music that is pretty different from what other bands are doing, it’s very technically based. Yeah, in one sense we just tend to do what we want to do for ourselves and not really try to please anyone else as selfish as it sounds, that’s just the way it is. We try to keep it as original as possible.

At the end of the song Brought Here to Suffer there’s an audio clip. What is it and why did you choose to put it at the end of that song?

So basically before I joined the band, I had to make a really difficult decision because my time with my previous band was coming to end and I had to take into consideration what I was going to do with my life, I was going to teach abroad, I had all these different career ideas and because I had already taught for three years. I wasn’t sure whether I wanted to do it again. Before I joined napoleon I rang my dad one night and he’d had a couple of drinks and something just came over me and told me that I should be recording this conversation, I don’t know, what it was. I was sat on my bed during this, he was on louder speaker and I had my Ipad was on the side and I opened up voice memo and hit record. I don’t know, because I listen to people like drake, rnb and hip hop. A lot of these artists tend to have voice clips and phone calls of different people, it’s always been something I am intrigued by because it’s quite soulful and very personal, there’s something about it that is really gripping. When I listen to people like drake and they’ve got phone calls, it’s kind of like an insight into what’s going on in that person’s life and I just really like that and if I was going to join napoleon I wanted that to be on the album because the catalyst to me joining the band and him guiding me giving me a pat on the back saying it’s okay. That’s my dad saying nothing is forever you my as well do it and you have the rest of your life to do what ever else you want to do. Pretty deep man.

What has been your favourite moment of the tour so far?

London was amazing, we played Islington Academy there were quite a lot of people there, everyone knew all the words. We had good friends there, people from our record label were there and it just felt really good, I got off stage with a big smile on my face. Sometimes you get off stage and you just feel like everything’s great. One of the best shows of my life.

So following on from that, what is the strangest thing you’ve seen on tour?

The strangest thing I’ve seen on tour personally, my God… in my life… off the top my head. We play this place in france about two or three months ago, it was like an hour away from paris, it wasn’t the strangest thing that’s happened on tour, but we played this weird bar and it nd and taking the time to buy merch or coming to a show and just taking the time out of your live to dedicate anything towards our band. Just thank you, thank you so much for taking the time out of your day to take an interest.

So you guys are from Exeter, How has touring been different from playing gigs back in Exeter? Do you miss playing in cavern?

I think our following is a lot bigger over in Europe, because the bands toured europe so many times we have a much bigger following there. So it’s a lot tougher over here because we haven’t really toured the uk much as a band. It’s the band’s first uk headline tour so it’s been interesting to see how many people are coming to shows. As a band you’ve just got to work on the places that don’t do as well but the uk is definitely a place that we need to improve on and it’s a hard place to crack. It’s not the same as when we tour Europe, hopefully it should be more rewarding the more we tour and stuff, but it’s been really good on this tour. We all been really surprised, we’ve all said every day “there’s like over 100 people at this show tonight, we’ve sold X amount of merch” we couldn’t ask for anything else more.

So slightly less intense question. If you could choose any superpower, what would it be?

Wow, no one has ever asked me that before. I’m gonna go for invisibility that would be cool.

Final question, if you could say anything to your fans what would it be?

I would just say thank’s so much for taking the time to listen to our band.
