Nerds in Denial was founded early in 2011. A four piece with a lead, rhythm, and bass guitar as well as a drummer. In late 2012, we became the band we are now with the addition of our current drummer, Dashuan to the group along with our other 3 members originally in the band: Ben Hare, Richie Cardiel, and Devin Johnston. After 5 years of playing in Rochester, Buffalo, New York City, and many other places Nerds in Denial has released ‘Crazy’, announcing the following day, the release of their first album, ‘Take Two’ which was released on July 4th, 2016.

How would you describe your music?
Well if you put two guitarists, a bassist, and a drummer who have only occupied this Earth for the past two decades you’ll end up with some sort of rock n’ roll. We love the blues, jazz, gospel, rap and you can hear the transparencies of our appreciation in our music. All in all, we love our three part harmonies and funk breakdowns, who doesn’t?

Tell us about how the history of the band?
Devin, Richie, and Ben all grew up together in the greater Rochester area, meeting in first and second grade. Eventually Dashuan would join our outfit when he moved to our west-side suburbia of Brockport.

What are you influences/ musical heroes?
Strangely enough all of us relatively connect to the members of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. John Frusciante is such an inspiration for guitars and harmonies, whereas Flea is obviously an amazing bass inspiration, and last but not least Chad Smith their drummer has shown it’s always better to raise the bar as a drummer. Of course RHCP isn’t our heaviest influence, just one example of many.

What inspires you?
Here at Nerds in Denial, we all have a great appreciation for admiring and appreciating life. Henceforth, we talk about our life experiences spanning from our relationships to even more trivial things, for example frustrations with the music scene.

Do you write on the road? or do you prefer to write in the studio?
We write all over the place, pretty much depends where we are. Whether we’re at home or took a little trip to the beach for a good ol’ composition session.

What is your favourite song to perform live?
It’s always varying but our crowd seems to be very fond of our songs, ‘Autophobia’ and ‘Miranda Rights’.

What would be your dream tour to be a part of?
If we could tour for Cage the Elephant or Kendrick Lamar, that would be crazy.

What are you current thoughts on the music industry?
To speak for myself, Ben the lead guitarist, I feel as if too many artists are trying to fit a sound or an image. We try to push the boundaries and try to make original, honest music.

What is the funniest/weirdest experience you have had on tour?
Let’s just say there’s this one place in NJ we always stop for a lil band smoke sesh.

What are your future plans?
To spread our music like the plague, and hide the vaccine for it.
