Jenny Gillespie
We were contacted to check out singer songwriter Jenny Gillespie. By all accounts Jenny is someone who is a bit different for this site. However, don’t let this put you off, she is returning to her acoustic roots but blending this folksy sound with electro ‘dream-pop’. She has combined with Sam Amidon on backing vocals and violin, and alt-country stalwart Jim White on drums to produce her newest EP.
The track we’ve been sent through is called ‘Creature of Our Make’. The song starts with soft guitars and drums that seem to swim around your head; it has a loose and easy feel. The vocal track then comes in and is a blend of Jenny’s voice and Sam’s. Rather than hard hitting; the vocals blend and meld themselves into one another and create the ethereal ‘dream-pop’ feel. The ocassional violin ‘riff’ adds a quirky touch here and there.
The song breaks down midway through with vocals coming from Jenny, she has a great voice that dances and compliments the simple guitar. Her voice is layered here and builds on the ‘dream-pop’ sensation. Sam’s vocals also supply an element of depth in this section but unlike the opening lyrics he takes more of a back seat and it is all about Jenny.
The outro section of the song is chunkier in sound, with some interesting work from the violin. This final part of the song really builds the ethereal sensation and given the right mood and setting could be quite trancy. The levels throughout the track are pretty spot on, nothing overpowers anything else again adding to this ‘dream-pop’ state of affairs.
I think that is my overall impression of this track, it sends you to that calm place. It doesn’t try to build you up or get you angry, it softens you out, makes you sit back and just relax for a time. My only criticism is that in places it seems slightly stilted, to carry off this blend of genres I personally think it would need to flow in certain places slightly better. Saying that however, Jenny has a superb voice and as a whole I quite like it. The breakdown in the middle of the song in particular. I do appreciate that this will not be to everyones taste but give it a go. Maybe even play it on Valentine’s day!
