Amycanbe hail from Italy. Originally comprised of Marco and Mattia, they formed in 2002 but actually started as a four-piece in 2005, after Francesca and Paolo joined. After the first live performances in clubs, theatres and local bars, Amycanbe recorded a self-produced demo (Yellow Suit – EP) with 5 songs which attracted the attention of critics and attained widespread success. Their continued success brings us to 2017

How would you describe your music?

It is a mix of soft and hard feelings.. we like to add anything we want in our sound.. in recent years samples are a great part of our sound… I usually call our music “not so happy and not for too young people!”….it is generally quite dreamy anyway even though quite various in its own way.

Tell us about how the history of the band?

Me and Marco started playing together …and we did for a while without having a name or a project….
Then things naturally evolved until we found Francesca…we fell in love with her voice…and then Paolo as well..that was the real start in 2006 I think…then first gigs, for demo turned in an EP and now 10 years just passed with 3 albums 2 eps a lot of gigs and changes of line-up….but we are still here: amazing!

What are you influences/ musical heroes?

All four of us listen to a lot of different music and we love to share the listening….often with disastrous results!!!.
We have definitely widened up our music and art culture playing and spending time together. There’s so many bands and sound which influenced us over the years like…for me, Ennio Morricone and Alessandro Alessandroni, Radiohead, Divine Comedy, Beatles, Stereolab…Tame Impala…Massive Attack

What inspires you?

For music, every time I listen to something (music or nature) ..I try ro understand why I like it and why not… and try to dismount the parts to understand if there is something we could use ..
About lyrics Francesca mostly writes from what she reads in books or magazine and from stories people tells her… I have to admit her lyrics are sometimes hard to understand…..but like the music they are simply a reflection of what we feel….really authentic

Do you write on the road? or do you prefer to write in the studio?

We don’t have a strict method when we decide to record. Some songs are pretty much done when we enter the studio..others get transformed during the recordings!

Songs are sometimes written in team.. or more often written in a home-studio by Marco with piano and keys…songs like White Slide, in our recent album called Wolf, came up like that..from marco Lap-top!…but others like Fighting came up totally in the studio…

All four of us listen to a lot of different music and we love to share the listening. We have definitely widened up our music and art culture playing and spending time together…this is reflecting in the song composition…at least I hope it happens!

Me and Marco usually spend a lot of time rehearsing and making demos (I trust he has more then 100 almost-finished-songs in his drive..), he writes a lot of different stuff..then we try to finish it with guitars and synths… what we like more …..or also cutting off a lot of things and just consider the most special or different ones…this pretty much done all together as a team then..Matta give more sense to the whole, editing, producing let’s say…while Francesca write lyrics…

What is your favourite song to perform live?

It is called ‘Everywhere’… we do that mostly in the last part of the concert.. I can finally break some amps in this particular tune!

What would be your dream tour to be a part of?

there are some great Italian bands that I like to tour with: Verdena and Perturbazione, or other musicians….Laetitia Sadier who is often in Italy…and she is very open to collaborations..I love her voice. I’d love to play in major festivals too…even in the little stages!

What are you current thoughts on the music industry?

Mixed to say the least… on one side I see a lot of new opportunities.. but we have to admit it is getting harder and harder to make a profit off music… fortunately we have friends who care about us.. they struggle to place our music in different places..some months ago we started collaborating with some fashion brands and also making soundtrack for TV series and independent Films…we really like to differentiate the way our music is “used”.

What is the funniest/weirdest experience you have had on tour?

Good and bad memories…

The first one..: I remember the first time toured the UK..we were in Bath I think.. 2 lovers..young lovers, They made a date to meet each other at our concert..nothing strange.. until I discovered one came from Australia and the other from France!

The latter: Recently while touring in South Italy someone robbed us of everything… and this episode has had enormous resonance, to such an extent that I Ironically call this “the most famous thing we did in the past 10 years!!!”.. in less than a month we were able to buy almost everything again, because our fans and friends donated artwork and stuff… they made it clear how great is the Love they deserve for us. It was mind-blowing… so seeing in a different way..this was good too.

What are your future plans?

We are writing new material and widening our music collaborations … … we are planning our summer shows n Italy, it looks like we will be quite busy… and (hopefully) foreign countries, we would live to make an Eurpean Mini Tour or something…we’ll see!!
